How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

As we age, our collagen begins to diminish. Gravity, diet, and other environmental factors can influence collagen production and skin laxity. Eventually, the skin’s underlying support structure begins to breakdown. Daily exposure to the sun’s UV-rays will cause our skin to become discolored and ultimately, premature wrinkles emerge.

Dr. Craig utilizes the Sandstone Fractional CO2 laser as his go-to treatment for total resurfacing. This device boasts a high-speed Ultra-Fine Fractional Scanner that directs tiny pulses of light in a grid pattern on the skin. Each pulse delivers a column of energy that reaches the skin’s dermal layer, helping to stimulate a natural renewal process of the body’s own collagen.

Because the laser beam is fractionalized, small areas of untreated skin are left between the treated spots. By strategically performing the procedure in this way, the healing process is accelerated. This creates extra collagen, reducing wrinkles, fine lines, stretch marks, burns, and scars.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

You may be a good fit for the treatment if you’d like to correct moderate aging or sun-damage but aren’t ready for more invasive surgical procedures. Fractional skin resurfacing is a safe and effective procedure for almost any skin type. Laser skin resurfacing can be applied to most areas of the body, and Dr. Craig will adjust the settings specific to your skin type.

How Long Does a Typical Treatment Take?*

Resurfacing with the Sandstone Fractional CO2 can take less than 30-minutes depending on the area being treated. Some patients will experience a warming sensation and an immediate tightening of the skin, with each pulse of laser light. Anesthetic ointments and cooling devices may be used to help reduce any discomfort during and after the procedure for patients with sensitive skin.

What Results Will I See?*

Many patients start to see results from their fractional laser resurfacing in about 2-weeks. Continued improvement will occur gradually as long-term collagen levels are boosted. Patients can opt for a single treatment with more dramatic results, or several lighter sessions with less recovery. Maintaining a healthy skincare regime and avoiding excessive sun exposure can prolong the outcome of your procedure.

Is There Any Downtime?*

Patients who have a full facial skin rejuvenation treatment will need to stay indoors for a few days while applying a topical ointment as directed by our Laser Technician. Skin resurfacing is a great alternative to corrective surgery as it helps to improve skin tone and texture, as well as boost collagen production, with minimal downtime.
