How Does Liposuction Work?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from various areas of your body to improve contour. Fat is removed by first inserting a small, hollow tube, called a cannula, through one or more tiny incisions near the area to be sculpted. Incisions are usually less than one-quarter inch in length and are placed as inconspicuously as possible, often within skin folds or contour lines.

Finally, the cannula is connected by tubing to an advanced vacuum pressure unit. Guided by Dr. Craig, the suction device vacuums away the unwanted fat. The result is a thinner, tighter and more contoured physique.

Liposuction is almost always combined with BodyTite by Dr. Craig for tightening of the skin in the treated area.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction procedures are ideal for men and women who cannot shed excess weight despite dieting and exercise. You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you have excess fat, or if you desire to contour, in any of the following areas:

Cheeks, Jowls & Neck
Upper Arms
Breast or Chest Areas
Abdomen & Flanks
Hips & Buttocks
Inner & Outer Thighs
Inner Knee

Board-certified surgeon Dr. Craig will help determine your candidacy for the procedure during your in-person consultation.

How Long Does a Typical Treatment Take?

A typical treatment can take anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on the area that’s being targeted. Patients can expect to be in-office and additional 30+ minutes for the application of a topical anesthetic. Most patients tolerate the procedure well with minimal discomfort during or after.

What Results Will I See?

You will be able to see some initial results immediately following your outpatient procedure. However, post-operative swelling can mask the final outcome. As swelling gradually subsides, your new figure will become evident. Optimal results will appear about 2-months post-treatment.

As long as you maintain your post-operative weight, liposuction is typically a once in a lifetime procedure. Even if you gain a few extra pounds, you may find that the weight is distributed more evenly instead of accumulating in the areas that were problematic for you in the past.

Is There Any Downtime?

The day after surgery, you will need to move around a bit to promote blood circulation. Dr. Craig will advise you to limit yourself to these brief periods of gentle activities for the first few days. Your dressings will be temporarily removed within several days so that Dr. Craig can examine the treated areas.
You will notice swelling and bruising, which is to be expected. Swelling usually begins to subside a week or so following surgery, while bruising can last three weeks or longer. There may also be numbness in some areas, and it may take several weeks before feeling returns. If stitches need to be removed, this is typically done within the first week after surgery.
You may be able to return to work in just a few days. In many instances, you can resume most of your normal activities within 1-2 weeks and begin some form of exercise soon after. The timing of your recovery depends largely on the extent of your surgery.
