How Does a Facelift Work?

Facelifts have come a long way in recent years. If done by a talented surgeon, a facelift (rhytidectomy) can virtually turn back the clock. Dr. Mark Craig’s attention to detail, extensive experience, and critically aesthetic eye make a facelift at Accent Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery a smart, safe choice.

The procedure begins by accessing the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) layer, the foundation of facial structure for the mid-to-lower face. Dr. Craig repositions the appropriate tissues and tightens the skin to correct skin laxity and smooth wrinkles. In some cases, the platysma muscles, which span the neck from the jawline to the upper chest, have weakened and require tightening to correct neck wrinkling. Together, these areas of focus make up a facelift.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Anyone with healthy skin and bone structure in relatively good health who is unhappy with their facial appearance due to aging may be a candidate. While most facelift patients are between the ages of 40-60, Dr. Craig has safely performed rhytidectomy on patients in their 70s and 80s as well.

The Procedure, Recovery, and Results

Facelifts are highly personalized. The procedure duration varies depending on facial features and the specific techniques to improve them. Facelift surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, and will take between 2-4 hours to complete.

Recovery also varies, especially if you have additional procedures done simultaneously. Post-op swelling and bruising are common, and prescription pain management is offered for your comfort. Many patients return to work within 1 week for less strenuous jobs, 2 weeks for those more active jobs. You can expect a full recovery around 4-6 weeks.

Despite the bruising and swelling, you will notice some immediate improvement. Your skin will be tighter, and your fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away. For the next 2-3 months, your swelling will fully subside, revealing a smoother, naturally youthful appearance. Final results can take 6-12 months while your tissues settle into their optimal position.

How Should I Prepare for My Facelift?

The more you can do in advance, the easier the post-op recovery period will be. Smokers should quit smoking at least 6 weeks prior for optimal healing. You may also be required to undergo lab tests and medical exams, and adjust or temporarily suspend certain medications before your procedure. Dr. Craig highly recommends Obagi® skin care to prepare your skin for the procedure.

Thoroughly assess where you will spend most of your recovery period and make it as comfortable as possible for maximum rest after your procedure. Sleeping with your head elevated several days post-op will help with healing and swelling. If you are not recovering mostly in your bed, make yourself a comfortable spot in your living room with needed items nearby. You should prepare soft foods ahead of time. It may be several days before you feel up to significant meal preparation.
