Learn More About Breast Implant Removal/ Exchange

A breast implant exchange is a surgical procedure that involves replacing your existing breast implants with new ones. This allows you to adjust the size, address any concerns, or choose a different type of implant. It’s an important step in your aesthetic journey.

Good candidates for breast implant removal or exchange are women in good overall health with realistic expectations about the outcomes. You may consider removal if you’re experiencing issues like rupture, capsular contracture, or chronic pain. Additionally, if your implants no longer align with your body image or lifestyle, removal may be a suitable option.

Implant exchange is ideal for women who are generally satisfied with their implants but wish to update them for reasons such as changing size, switching materials, or addressing complications. A thorough consultation with your surgeon will help identify the best option based on your personal goals and medical considerations.

The duration of the implant removal or exchange procedure varies based on your specific situation and goals. For implant removal, an incision is typically made in the same location as your original surgery to access and remove the implants. If needed, Dr. Craig may also remove scar tissue or perform a breast lift for enhanced appearance. In an implant exchange, the current implants are removed, and new ones are inserted, potentially involving adjustments to the implant pocket or techniques depending on the type chosen. Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia and generally take one to two hours.

You’ll notice initial results right away, but final outcomes may take up to 6 months as swelling decreases and your breasts settle. Many women are very satisfied with smaller but shapely breasts, while others prefer new implants.

Following the procedure, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which are normal and usually resolve within a few days to a week. Recovery times vary, but most patients can resume light activities within a week and return to more strenuous activities within six to eight weeks and four weeks for implant removal.

Dr. Craig will provide comprehensive post-operative instructions to help manage discomfort and ensure optimal healing. As swelling decreases, final results will become clearer over the weeks and months following surgery.
