Learn More About Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is a surgical procedure to help improve the shape and size and/or position of one’s ears. This procedure is often performed to “pin back” the patient’s ears correcting the aesthetic look of the ears in relation to the patient’s face. Otoplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure that doesn’t take much time or require a large amount of recovery. Otoplasty is easier to perform on younger patients with softer cartilage but can be performed at any age.

Ear surgery is often recommended for children as they near total ear development (between the ages of 4 and 6). Correction of the ears prior to the child entering school helps reduce potential trauma caused by the teasing of classmates. Adults may also have their ears reshaped. As long as you are in good health, there is no upper age limit for this surgery.

A typical otoplasty surgery takes between 1-2 hours to perform. Ear surgery is done under general anesthesia to help keep the patient comfortable. Patients can expect lifelong ear correction with a single outpatient surgery.

Results from corrective ear surgery are immediate. There may be some initial swelling which should quickly dissipate. An optimal outcome from otoplasty surgery will be visible about 2-3 months post-procedure. Ear surgery is designed as a once-in-a-lifetime treatment.

Downtime with ear surgery is often minimal. Pain and swelling will be at their worst 24-72 hours after surgery. Discomfort can easily be managed with prescription medication during this time.   Dissolvable sutures are used for this procedure for the convenience of the patient.   Most patients are able to return to work or school after about 5-7 days. More strenuous activities including exercise and contact sports should be avoided for several weeks.
