Learn More About Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, improves the appearance of the eyes by addressing both functional issues, like sagging skin that affects vision, and aesthetic concerns. The procedure can target the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Ptosis is a condition where the eyelids drop over the eyes (pupils) which can impair vision.

Dermatochalasis is a condition referring to excess skin of the eyelid affecting vision or cosmetic concerns of the lower eyelid.

Upper Blepharoplasty: An incision is typically made in the natural fold of the upper lid, allowing for the removal of excess skin and fatty tissue.

Ptosis Repair:  An incision is typically made in the natural fold of the upper eyelid and the weakened muscle is repaired as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with an upper blepharoplasty.

Lower Blepharoplasty: An incision is often hidden just below the lower lashes, where excess skin, muscle, and fat can be removed or redistributed to reduce puffiness.

Laser treatments may also be used to tighten the skin.

Ideal candidates are healthy adults looking to combat visible aging signs on the upper face. Non-smokers tend to achieve the best results.  You may be a good candidate if you have:

  • Excess skin obscuring the upper eyelid fold
  • Loose skin that may impair vision
  • Puffy upper eyelids that make you look tired
  • Fine lines and wrinkles on the lower eyelids
  • Bags and dark circles under the eyes
  • Droopy lower eyelids

Dr. Craig may recommend pairing a blepharoplasty with a brow lift if sagging eyebrows are also a concern.

Treatment times vary based on individual needs and whether combination procedures are performed. Typically, upper eyelid surgery takes less than 1 hour, while lower eyelid surgery is more complex and may take longer. Patients having both procedures can expect surgery to last about 2 hours. Most upper blepharoplasties and ptosis repairs are performed under sedation.   If upper blepharoplasties are combined with lower blepharoplasties, facelifts or brow lifts, they may be performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

Visible improvements can be seen immediately after surgery, with eyes appearing more open and vibrant. Fine lines and wrinkles will be significantly reduced. Results will continue to improve as swelling subsides, with final results taking up to 6 months or longer.

Recovery times vary among individuals. Initially, you may feel a tight sensation around your eyes and some mild discomfort, which can be managed with medication. The first 48 hours post-surgery often involve swelling and bruising. Your vision might be blurry for a few days, and you may experience light sensitivity, excess tearing, or dryness. Dr. Craig recommends using natural saline tears to relieve burning or itching.

Mild swelling may persist for several weeks, while others may notice improvement within a week. Bruising typically fades within 7-10 days, and stitches are removed within a week after surgery. Wearing dark sunglasses is advised to protect your eyes from wind and sun during recovery. Dr. Craig recommends avoiding lifting greater than 10-15 pounds with in the first two weeks and especially bending over to lift heavy objects.
