Lip augmentation can help transform thin or saggy lips into fuller, plumper lips, as well as reduce fine lines around the mouth. There are several solutions that Dr. Craig utilizes to help enhance lips and reduce lip lines and wrinkles. Based on your individual needs, you may be better suited for one procedure over the other.

Lip Injections

Lips are often enhanced with lip injections. These injections are either a synthetic product, like hyaluronic acid, or the patient’s own fat. JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE and VOLBELLA is one of the more common collagen-enhancing fillers with hyaluronic acid, and you can expect the results to last up to 12-18 months. Depending on a patient’s anatomy, they may require multiple treatments for the desired outcome.

Fat Grafting

If you opt for fat grafting to help enhance your lips you can expect longer-lasting results. However, this is a more invasive procedure that involves grafting fat from another area of your body and transferring it to your lips. This is commonly performed in combination with other procedures in the operation room.

Surgical Lip Lift

A lip lift is a permanent cosmetic procedure that reduces the space between your nose and lips. It creates more defined and natural-looking lips. There are different types of lip lift procedures, depending on your goals. This can be performed as an office procedure or in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure in the operating room.

You’re a good candidate for lip augmentation treatments if you have thinning, aging lips or want to fix the appearance of vertical wrinkles (smoker’s lines). Lip augmentation with JUVÉDERM® is safe and effective for nearly anyone. Patients seeking lip augmentation with fat transfer should have existing fat elsewhere on the body for harvesting (abdomen, flanks, thighs, or buttocks).

The treatment length depends on the option you select. Lip augmentation with fillers can take less than 20-minutes, while fat grafting can take about an hour. Both procedures are fairly comfortable and well tolerated among clients who get them. JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE AND VOLBELLA is lidocaine-enhanced and we use a topical anesthetic in the office. Fat transfer procedures often enlist the help of local anesthetic to minimize discomfort, but is more often done in the operating room when combined with other procedures.

Patients can see instantly fuller lips with either JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA, VOLLURE or fat transfer procedures. An optimal outcome can be seen about 1-2 weeks after your treatment as residual swelling dissipates. Results can last anywhere from twelve months to a couple of years, depending on the procedure you select.

With dermal fillers, the recovery is minimal. In rare cases, you may experience some bruising and swelling for up to 2-weeks, but you can resume most activities immediately. With fat grafting, your recovery will vary depending on your age and health. That said, swelling may last weeks, and you will likely want to wait at least 5-7 days before getting back to your normal routine.
