How Does Neck Lift Work?

Sagging skin, excess fat, or the appearance of neck cords can be corrected with neck lift surgery. Neck bands and lines (also known as necklace lines) are very visible in thinner patients. Neck bands can be treated with platysmaplasty. The neck lift will tighten skin, elevate the muscles, and ultimately help give you a more youthful look. Dr. Craig meets with each patient individually to evaluate and determine the best corrective procedure or type of neck lift. In some cases, Dr. Craig may recommend both a neck lift and a facelift to help you achieve your end-goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?

Neck lift procedures might be right for you if you have sagging neck skin, deep neck wrinkles, and/or unwanted neck bands. As with all surgical procedures, you should be a healthy nonsmoker with realistic expectations for your treatment. Although most patients opt to have neck lift surgery in their 40s to 60s, the procedure is safe for patients both younger and older. Dr. Craig will help assess your candidacy during your initial consult.

How Long Does a Typical Treatment Take?

Neck lift surgery is done as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. A typical treatment takes about 90-minutes to perform. During the neck lift, Dr. Craig will remove excess fat from below the chin or neck using a gentle liposuction procedure. Excess skin is carefully trimmed, and the remaining skin will be tightened resulting in a more youthful look.

“My experience was great! I was nervous and Dr Craig was very straight forward in telling me exactly what was gonna happen each step. He also has an awesome staff who is friendly and sincere in helping you.”*

What Results Will I See?*

Some initial improvement will be immediate. You’ll be able to see a more contoured facial appearance from every angle. Optimal results will be seen about 4-6 weeks after your neck lift procedure. Final results will be visible within 6-months as the last of the residual swelling fully dissipates.

Is There Any Downtime?

You may need to take some time off of work to allow your neck to heal. Patients will return home with a neck support garment the same day. Post-surgical garments should be worn for at least 1-week to maintain the neck’s new position. The first few days should be spent with minimal activity, while more strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks. Post-operative bruising and swelling are common, especially in the first few days. Medication is prescribed to deal with any pain or discomfort. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within 1-2 weeks.
