A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that can achieve results that are otherwise unattainable with diet and exercise alone. It is a procedure that typically yields long-lasting outcomes without the need for secondary procedures.

At Accent Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Tummy Tuck procedures are performed under general anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout. Dr. Mark Craig uses his exceptional skills as a board-certified surgeon to ensure an optimal outcome with as little pain, scarring, and downtime as possible.

Returning to Normal Activities

While recovery can vary from patient to patient, most feel comfortable returning to work and non-strenuous activities in about 1-2 weeks. However, if you have a physically demanding job, Dr. Craig may suggest taking upwards of one month or more off. Strenuous activities such as exercise or heavy lifting should be postponed according to your specific recovery plan provided by Dr. Craig.

Your overall recovery time is dependent upon several factors including:

  • Your age
  • Your general physical condition
  • The extent of your surgery

Although you may feel ready to get back to your normal day-to-day activities, it is important not to push yourself too hard or too fast. Otherwise, you may risk prolonging the recovery process and widening your post-operative scars.

Full Tummy Tuck Recovery

Abdominoplasty is a beneficial procedure for many men and women. However, it is a surgical procedure that can take 6-8 months to fully recover and see your final results. Most patients see significant improvement in 3-4 weeks. You may experience numbness or a “pulling sensation” during this time. While most post-operative swelling should subside within several weeks, it can take up to 3-months to fully subside for some patients. Tummy tuck scars generally fade with time and are the least visible after about 6-12 months.

Planning for Tummy Tuck Recovery

Dr. Craig is a board-certified surgeon who works to meticulously give his patients the long-lasting results they desire. There are several things you can do before and after your surgery to ensure an optimal outcome as well.

Create a Safe Recovery Space

You may be uncomfortable in the first few days following surgery. Having everything at arms reach will go a long way towards promoting a speedy recovery. Think about items such as pillows, blankets, snacks, water, prescription medications, and entertainment when creating your safe recovery space.

Do Not Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Even minor tasks can be difficult at first. You will need to ask a friend or family member to drive you home from surgery and stay with you for at least 24-48 hours. You should also ensure you have pet and child care scheduled throughout the recovery process.

Get in Your Best Health Possible

As with any surgery, you should go into your tummy tuck procedure in your best health. Make sure to drink lots of water, exercise, and eat healthy foods for an immune boost. Keep drinking alcohol to a minimum and cut out smoking entirely.

With careful preparation and closely following your post-operative recovery plan, you will be back to your normal routine before you know it. Our highly-trained staff will be available to answer any recovery questions you have throughout the process.

“Around the time I turned 40, after having a hysterectomy, my body went through a lot of hormonal changes and I gained a considerable amount of weight in my midsection. After I was able to get my hormones regulated and working out regularly to get the weight off, I was left with a lot of loose skin on my stomach. It was driving me crazy because I’m very active working out doing boot camps and teaching spin classes at Pedal Life. I was so unhappy and uncomfortable in my own skin. I called Dr. Craig’s office and made my decision to have a tummy tuck on November 5, 2018. This was the best decision ever! I am so happy with my results! After only 4 weeks, I was able to start back exercising. I love being strong, healthy, and finally being comfortable with my body! I have always told myself that if I believe I can do something then I can do it. Thank you so much Dr. Craig for helping me be happy and comfortable with my body. You did an amazing job, and I beyond happ y with the results!” *
